Art Incontro - Italian Art Tours with Lucia Parrella

Lucia Parrella initiated art INCONTRO in 1999 with the aim of encouraging cultural exchange with artists and craft practitioners in central and southern Italy. The art INCONTRO programs are lead by Lucia, who also facilitates the practical art sessions as outlined in each itinerary.

Each art INCONTRO program is enhanced by local art historians, artists and craft practitioners presenting lectures and practical demonstrations in a range of studios settings, craft workshops, museums and contemporary galleries. The workshop demonstrations include ceramics, printmaking, typography, weaving, paper-making, coral carving and wrought iron.

Lucia Parrella has over 15 years experience coordinating cultural and educational programs both in Australia and Italy. As an artist, Lucia's area of interest is in drawing, printmaking and artists books, subjects that she has taught at both a tertiary and community education level. A former recipient of the Frederick May Foundation Scholarship for Italian Studies from the University of Sydney, Lucia has also worked as a resident artist in print studios in Umbria and in Venice. She has a strong and on-going connection with Napoli and the Campania area: the region of her family and cultural heritage. Her qualifications include a BA from the University of Sydney and a Bachelor of Creative Arts from the University of Wollongong.

ART INCONTRO offers cultural programs in Italy for people with an interest in visual art and craft and a desire to find time and inspiration for their own creative projects and interests. Situated in locations of historic and natural beauty, ART INCONTRO programs provide a unique opportunity to develop ideas and skills while being immersed in the landscape, history and language of central and southern Italy.

ART INCONTRO groups may include people with an interest in drawing, painting, printmaking, photography or books and writing. The programs begin with a bookmaking workshop enabling participants to produce a handmade journal to document their journey. Specific art skills are not required to participate and the programs are flexible to engage different levels of experience.

ART INCONTRO programs are also designed for people who appreciate a degree of autonomy and wish to experience something of genuine Italian living. For this reason, the programs are based in comfortable apartment accommodation which reflect the character of the communities in which we live. The programs are mainly self-catering and, where convenient, make use of local transport. ART INCONTRO groups are small with numbers ranging from between eight to twelve participants. This small size allows for a flexible program and enables us to interact with local artists and craft practitioners.
